Course Objective

The purpose of the course is to provide a basic understanding of macroeconomic concepts such as national income, inflation, unemployment. The course provides understanding of short run fluctuations by Keynesian model, money and its uses, monetary policy tools. Alternative views of the effectiveness of fiscal, monetary and other governmental policies are also analyzed.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic macroeconomic concepts so that the learner can follow economic news in the media.
2   Identify the components of national income, causes of inflation and types of unemployment through lectures.
3   Demonstrate an understanding of simple Keynesian model, including multipliers, equilibrium in goods market by applying graphical and mathematical tools.
4   Demonstrate an understanding of money, uses of money and money creation by commercial banks.
5   Identify the monetary policy tools of the Central Bank.
6   Acquire the skills to use library and media resources to enhance economic reasoning.

Assessment Criteria

1. The learner will clearly define basic macroeconomic concepts in contemporary economic media news.
2. The learner will clearly define economic concepts and terms regarding national income accounting, unemployment and inflation.
3. The learner will use necessary graphical and mathematical tools to explain goods and money market equilibrium.
4. The learner will compute multipliers and elaborate on changes in goods and money market equilibrium.
5. The learner will recognize economic issues defined in reserved books and resources at the library.

1. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
