Course Objective

The main objective of this course is to develop in students the ability to analyze a given mechanics problem in a simple and logical manner and to apply its solution a few fundamental and well-understood principles.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to compare internal and external force concepts.
2   Ability to explain stress and strain relationships.
3   Ability to calculate stresses in axial loading, bending, torsion and shear.
4   Ability to use transformation of stress relationships.
5   Ability to discuss stresses resulting from general loading.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction, internal forces and stresses, normal stress, shearing stress and bearing stress.
2 Stress on an oblique plane, stress components, ultimate stress and factor of safety.
3 Normal stress and strain under axial loading, normal stress-strain diagram, Hooke s law.
4 Statically indeterminate problems, method of superposition, thermal stresses.
5 Torsion of shafts and shearing stresses.
6 Angle of twist in the elastic range, statically indeterminate shafts
7 1st mid-term exam
8 Shear and bending moment diagrams.
9 Bending of beams and normal stresses.
10 Shear on the horizontal face of a beam element, determination of the shear flow and shearing stress.
11 Transformation of plane stress, principal stresses and maximum shearing stress.
12 Transformation of plane stress, Mohr s circle for plane stress.
13 2nd mid-term exam
14 Stresses under combining loadings.
