Course Objective

1)To give theoretical knowledge on fundamental yarn properties and giving knowledge to understand the interference of these properties with fabric properties.
2)To give knowledge and practical abilities on measurement of yarn and fabrics and evaluation of these properties with appropriate test methods.
3) To give the ability of practise on yarn and fabrics by making practical applications in physical testing laboratory .
4)To give necessary knowledge for evaluating and interpreting the test results statistically.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Gaining theoretical knowledge on fundamental yarn properties and giving knowledge to understand the interference of these properties with fabric properties.
2   Gaining knowledge and practical abilities on yarn properties which are important for fabric production and measuring methods for these properties.
3   Gaining knowledge and practical abilities on fabric structural, physical and mechanical properties and on measuring methods for these properties.
4   Gaining the ability of practise on yarn and fabrics by making practical applications in physical testing laboratory .
5   Gaining necessary knowledge for evaluating and interpreting the test results statistically.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 General knowledge of interrelationships between fiber, yarn and fabric properties
2 Yarn count and yarn counting systems.Measurement of yarn count.
3 Effect of twist direction and number of twist on fabric properties. Relationship between twist and yarn linear density.Determination of twist direction and measurement of number of twist in yarns.
4 Determination of number of twist by different measuring methods.
5 Measurement methods for yarn strength and elongation properties.Factors affecting strength test results.
6 Relationships between yarn count-twist-strength. Yarn unevenness:definition, importance, calculation of theoretical limit unevenness.
7 Measurement methods of yarn unevenness.Sources of yarn unevenness and studies to obtain these sources. Midterm
8 Fundamental knowledge on yarn hairness.Sources of yarn hairness, measurement methods Midterm
9 Classification of fabric properties:dimensional,structural properties,chemical properties,mechanical properties,tactile properties
10 Knowledge about sampling for fabric tests.Knowledge related to dimensional and structural propertiesof fabrics,measurement methods
11 Fabric mechanical properties and measurement methods:Breaking strength and extension, tear strength
12 Abrasion resistance and pilling. Bursting strength.
13 Practical work exam in the laboratory
14 Seam strength and seam slippage
