Course Objective

To give the ability of identify and analyze the physical structure of fibers by using theoretical and experimental methods about morphology and structure of textile fibers.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to classify chemical fibers.
2   Ability to describe the structure and properties of fibers.
3   Ability to associate physical notions and properties of fibers.
4   Ability to analyze theoretical and experimental measurement techniques.
5   Ability to compare theoretical and experimental measurement techniques.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition, classification and general properties of textile fibers.
2 Fine structure of fibers and investigation methods.
3 Comparison of basic physical properties (length, fineness, density etc.) of various fibers
4 Definition and comparison of methods (DSC, TGA etc.) used for thermal analysis of fibers
5 Theoretical and experimental methods used for analyzing crystal structure of fibers
6 Theoretical and experimental methods for determining fiber moisture and water uptake
7 Experimental methods for determining mechanical properties of fibers.
8 Theoretical methods for predicting mechanical properties of fibers and their comparison with experimental methods.
9 Thermo-mechanic behavior of fibers
10 Electrical properties of fibers and their dielectric behaviors
11 Midterm Exam.
12 Optical properties of fibers (birefringence, lustre)
13 Microscopic methods for fiber identification.
14 Theoretical and experimental methods for analyzing fiber deformaiton in long term loadings
