Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide the students of textile engineering basic concepts on physicochemical topics that they may require in their careers.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Know basic concepts of thermodynamics and evaluate the chemical events in terms of thermodynamics
2   Be able to interpret the events taking place on the surface
3   Be able to determine the kinetics of chemical reactions
4   Be able to reveal the phase diagram of single substances or of mixture of substances
5   Know the determination of physical properties such as surface tension and viscosity
6   Know general properties of mixtures.
7   Know general properties of gases and solids
8   Know the difference betweem battery and electrolysis system and have knowledge on application fields

2 Basic concepts on thermodynamics, the first law
3 The second and third laws of thermodynamics
4 The Gibbs free energy and enthalpy functions
5 Basic thermodynamic equations of closed systems, chemical potential and fugacity
6 States of Matter and physical properties.
7 Surface tension and viscosity
8 Mid-term exam
9 Thermodynamics of mixtures
10 Gibbs' phase rule and phase diagrams of mixtures
11 Electrochemistry
12 Solids and diffraction techniques
13 Chemical kinetics, basic concepts, the first and second order reactions
14 The kinetics of complex reactions and adsorption
