Course Objective

Definition, production methods, applications and functions of technical textiles. High performance fibers and their properties. Yarns types
for technical textile applications. Varieties, properties and production techniques of non-woven fabrics.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to discuss the defination and production proceses of technical textiles.
2   Ability to descirbe functions and application areas of technical textiles.
3   Ablity to analyze high perfomance fibers and their propeties.
4   Ability to categorize technical yarns.
5   Ablity to analyze types, properties and production proceses of nonwoven fabrics.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Definition and statistics of technical textiles. Production methods applications and functions of technical textiles.
2 High performance fibers. History, production method, properties and applications of paraaramids. Liquid crystal spinning.
3 Production, properties and applications of high tenacity polyethylene fibers. Gel spinning. Aromatic polyesters etc.
4 Production, properties and applications of heat resistant fibers such as meta aramides
5 Production, properties and applications of and chemically resistant fibers.
6 High function fibers. Bi-component, micro and nano fibers. Electro spinning. High sense fibers.
7 1st Midterm Exam
8 Varieties and production systems of technical yarns.
9 Definition, types and production methods of tufting structures. Tufting machines. Patterning in tufting structures.
10 Finishing process of tufting carpets.
11 Fibers for non-woven production. Non-woven production methods. Web formation.
12 Binding of webs. Mechanic, chemical, thermal, and water jet binding.
13 Application areas of non-wovens.
14 2nd Midterm Exam
15 Non-wovens produced with mali technique; malimo, malivlies, malipol, maliwatt, voltex.
