Course Objective

1. To classify the long staple spinning system and to give general information about long staple spinning system
2. To give detailed information about raw-material preparation processes
3. To give detailed information about spinning preparation processes, machines and technologies
4. To give detailed information about woollen, worsted and semi-worsted spinning technologies and machines

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learning physical-chemical properties and morphological structure of wool fibre,
2   Having detailed knowledge about raw-material preparation processes like wool classifying, washing, drying, carbonising etc.
3   Having detailed information about spinning preparation processes like openning and pre-cleaning, blowroom, blending, oiling etc.
4   Having detailed knowledge about woollen spinning system and machines
5   Having detailed knowledge about worsted and semi-worsted spinning system and machines

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction: Definition of long staple spinning, classification of long staple spinning systems, process stages in long staple yarn production, an overview on properties of wool fibres.
2 Morphological structure of wool fibre, Chemical structure of wool fibre, Bonds in wool fibre
3 Physical properties of wool fibres (length, fineness, crimp etc.)
4 Classification of wool, dirt on wool, pre-openning and pre-cleaning of wool
5 Wool washing, washing machines, material delivery systems in washing machines, wool drying, drying machines
6 Cleaning of burr, Carbonising, wool blending, oiling, openning machine
7 Theory of carding
8 1st Midterm
9 Woollen spinning technology, blending in woollen spinning, woollen carding
10 Woollen spinning machines
11 Preparation processes in worsted spinning and worsted carding
12 Drawing machine Roving machine
13 2nd Midterm
14 Worsted spinning machines and worsted yarn production planning
