Course Objective

The objective of this course is to provide perceptual knowledge and sense of awareness for the accidents at work and occupational diseases which can be encountered in working life especially related to engineering applications, and take the necessary precautions, and official and legal responsibilities an engineer must have. Students can prepare Health and Safety Planning for Job/work place related to in areas of electrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy or pyrometallurgy.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   be able to identify hazards
2   be able to analyze hazardous circumstances that may arise
3   be able to defined basic concepts associated with accidents and occupational diseases
4   be able to defined legal requirements associated with accidents and occupational diseases
5   be able to take remedial and engineering measures to be applied in the metallurgical plants
6   be able to improve and develop control mechanisms for realization of the measures to be taken.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Midterm exams and final exam will be performed as classical written exams with closed book-notebook. Assessment criteria and assignments related to homework and reports which requested from students will be announced on the web and linked from the department home page.

Assessment Criteria

Learning outcome LO5, will be assessed by means of homework and by means of oral presentation. Other learning outcomes will be assessed by means of exam questions.

Course Policies and Rules

Students are expected to be in the classroom before the instructor's presence, not to interrupt the lecture, be prepared with the lecture material, as well as to contribute to scientific discussions during the lecture and to participate efficiently in every assignment. Lectures and examinations are carried out with respect to regulation of Engineering Faculty of Dokuz Eylul University, named "Principles of Education and Examination Practice".
