Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of surveying required for architectural applications. This knowledge gives context to the fundamentals of surveying such as traversing, leveling, manual map drafting. The theory presented in lectures will be practiced with surveying practice.

1 Introduction to surveying. Role of surveying in architectural applications
2 Maps, map scales, methods of representing
3 Assumptions about the shape of earth. Coordinate reference systems. Accuracy of measurements and types of error. Basic principals of surveying
4 Surveying equipments, surveying by prism, instruments and methods in distance and angle measurements
5 Methods of measuring area
6 Traversing. Principals of traversing. Types of traverses; open traverses, closed traverses, link traverses
7 Open and link traverses
8 Closed traverses
9 Manual map drafting, properties of contours, drawing contour plans, surveying methods for producing contours
10 Levelling principals and methods
11 Open and link leveling
