Course Objective

The objective is to introduce the historical assets with a rich historical past, but which lost these values considerably, constituting the identity of Izmir to the future architects and to raise consciousness about protecting them and surviving and making use of them.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Ability to explain the historical development of Izmir city.
2   Ability to specify the works of art from different eras which live up to our time.
3   Ability to explain the works of art in the city from different eras.
4   Ability to discuss the issues of protection of the historical monuments located in the city.
5   Ability to compare the historical structures of the same type located in the city.
6   Ability to interpret the historical values in the city.
7   Ability to communicate a research about the historical fabric of Izmir city in visual, written and oral form.

4 Works of Prehistoric-Aiolian-Ionian Periods.
5 Works of Hellenistic-Roman-Byzantine Periods.
6 General View of Ottoman - Turkish Periods.
7 Station Buildings.
8 Commercial Buildings.
9 Water buildings (Baths, Fountains and Sebils), Health Buildings.
10 Mid-Term Exam
11 Cultural Buildings Collection of Take-homes.
12 Religious Buildings.
13 Traditional housing architecture in Izmir.
14 Conservation Problems of Historical Assets in Izmir and Recommendations of Solutions. General evaluation.

The students are expected to be interested, sensitive and observatory particularly within the context of historical buildings and environments in the city besides participating in the course actively.

Final Exam % 50 (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5, LOÇ6)
Class participation % 5 (LO 4, LO5, LO6)

Informational aspect of learning outcomes (LO1, LO2) are measured by mid-term and final exam, while comprehension aspect (LO3) is measured by mid-term, final exam and assignment; application aspect (LO4) is measured by final exam, assignment and class participation; analysis aspect (LO5) is measured by final exam and class participation; evaluation aspect (LO6) is measured by final exam, assignment and class participation and LO7 is measured by assignment.
Evaluation regarding the class participation shall be determined by student s attendance, active participation in the discussions during the class and qualitative contribution in this context.
