Course Objective

Professional Socialization explores the present and emerging role of the professional nurse, while supporting and enhancing the student s role as a member of the profession. Emphasis is placed on expanding the student s sense of professionalism through self-reflection, exploration, and dialogue. Characteristics of the professional nurse are explored through engaging in a professional learning experience, direct observation and interaction with a mentor, and interpretation of related literature

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Identify strengths, limitations, and interests in relation to professional goals through self-reflection.
2   Analyze behaviors that characterize professional nursing.
3   Examine personal values and beliefs related to professionalism.
4   Interpret literature to support professional practice and continued professional growth.
5   Analyze the impact of ethical, legal, and political influences on professional practice.
6   Communicate effectively as a component of the professional role.
7   Reflect on challenges, opportunities and rewards afforded the nurse as a member of the profession.
