Course Objective

The objective of the course is to introduce the students both the basic concepts of psychology and also some basic concepts of communication abilities (empathy, defence mechanisms, etc) that they can use while they are interacting with the patients. In that regard the students are also supposed the have a better understanding towards their own self and behaviour.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   They will have the knowledge about the concepts of conscious, subconscious and the unconscious; and they will be aware of their effects upon the behaviour both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients.
2   They will have the knowledge about the concepts of id, ego and superego; and they will be aware of their effects upon the behaviour both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients.
3   They will have the knowledge about the concepts of motives and motivated behaviour; and they will be aware of their effects upon the behaviour both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients.
4   They will have the knowledge about the concepts of frustration, conflicts and mental trauma; and they will be aware of their effects upon the behaviour both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients.
5   They will have the knowledge about the concept of anxiety and its symptoms; and they will be aware of its effects upon the behaviours both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients.
6   They will have the knowledge about various defense mechanisms; and they will be aware of their effects upon the behaviours both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients.
7   They will have the knowledge about the stages of Freud s psychosexual development theory and they will be aware of each stages effects upon the behaviours both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients
8   They will have the knowledge about the stages of Erikson s psychosocial development theory and they will be aware of each stages effects upon the behaviours both in daily life and also along the life cycle. They can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication while they are interacting with the patients
9   They will have the knowledge about the concept of empathy and its importance in interpersonal communication. They can have a better understanding towards the patients while they are interacting with them and they can use this knowledge to be able to have a more qualified and positive communication with them.
10   They will have the knowledge about the definition of mental health and mental illness; and they can have a psychological-psychiatric point of view towards the patients, understand them better and forward them to the professionals when necessary.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Conscious, subconscious and unconscious; Id, ego, and superego.
2 Motives, motivated behaviour, frustration and conflict, mental traumatization ; Anxiety, the symptoms of anxiety, the psychoanalytic meaning of anxeity, the roots and the development of anxiety.
3 Defense mechanisms of ego: Repression, denial, projection, introjection, splitting, dissociation, displacement.
4 Defense mechanisms of ego: Rationalization, intellectualization, reaction-formation, isolation, conversion, undoing.
5 Defense mechanisms of ego: Concretization, fixation, regression, day-dreaming, identification, projective identification, sublimation.
6 Personality development; the basic concepts of Freud s psychosexual development theory and Erikson s psychosocial development theory.
7 I. midterm.
8 Freud s stages of psychosexual development: Oral, anal, phallic, latent, and genital.
9 Erikson s stages of psychosocial development: Basic trust, autonomy, initiative, industry, identity, intimacy, generativity, and ego integrity.
10 Empathy and its role in interpersonal relations.
11 Definiton of mental health and mental illness.
