Course Objective

The course aims to give basic knowledge about conservation, evaluation and restoration of historical environment.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1	Ability to explain the basic concepts about historical environment, protection and restoration.
2	Ability to comment upon the protection issues regarding historical environment.
3	Ability to criticize the protection history of the country and to envision the approaches towards the solutions of the problems of protecting the historical values.
4	Ability to interrelate and compare archeological sites and monuments as elements of historical environment.
5	Ability to interpret protection laws and decisions on principles.
6	Ability to evaluate the work of art within the frame of system of values regarding the detection of the work of art to be protected.
7	Making research about historical environment and ability to communicate this in visual, written and oral form.
8	Ability to make diductions from findingsabout historical environment.

3	Aim of conservation.
4	Reasons for conservation of historical environment. 4.1. Basic approaches in conservation. 4.2. Elements of Historical Environment. 4.2.1. Monuments 4.2.2. Sites Assignment of take-home subjects.
5	Technical visit concerning historical urban fabric in Izmir.
6	System of values of specifying the works to be conserved.
7	Concept of Restoration 7.1. Restoration methods
8	International rules and regulations as recommendations about Conservation-Restoration.
9	The discussion of certain issues in terms of the restoration approach in the light of international regulations (environment, unity of style, assumption, technical equipment, annexes and etc.)
10	Mid-term exam International organizations about Conservation-Restoration.
11	View of the Phenomena of Conservation and Restoration in Turkey Conservation laws and regulations in the Ottoman Empire. (Asar-ı Atika nizamnameleri (regulations))
12	Conservation laws and resolutions in Turkey 12.1. The conservation laws No. 1710, 2863 and 3386 12.1.1. Amendments by the resolutions enacted in 1995 and 1996. 12.1.2. The law No. 5226 and the following resolutions; studying the regulations and the amendments made
13	The innovations brought by the developments on the agenda of conservation and their reflections on the restoration practices. Collection of take-homes (Mid-term -2)

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course is taught in a lecture, class presentation and discussion format.
Visual materials will be used intensively and technical excursions will be made during the course.

Students' active participation in the course is expected.

-Conveying through oral and visual presentations.
-On-site observation, examination, discussion within the scope of technical trip.
-Development of the ideas which have been suggested through the discussion medium in the classroom & interpretations
