Course Objective

The aim of this course is to introduce the students with the Ottoman social history, with an emphasis on the women, non-muslims, Ottoman city/rural life and relation between people from different community in pre-Tanzimat period.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to recognize fundamental features of Ottoman social life which dated back to fifteenth century
2   to explain essential features of Ottoman socio-political life
3   to discuss the place of women in the Ottoman society
4   to comment on relations of muslims and non-muslims in the Ottoman Empire
5   to consider relations between Ottoman urban and rural lifes

2 Ottoman social history studies (in Turkey and abroad)
3 Sources of Ottoman social history I (archival materials)
4 Sources of Ottoman social history II (travels/journeys and first-person narratives)
5 State and society in the Ottoman Empire
6 "Classes" in the Ottoman society
7 Rural life (peasants and nomads)
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Urban life (economic and social relations between people from different "strata")
10 Urban life (guilds and artisans)
11 Ottoman non-muslims (was there a "millet system" )
12 Ottoman non-muslims (their relations with the Muslims and the state)
13 Women in the Ottoman society
14 Social crisis (poverty, plague, fire, war, earthquake)
15 Final Exam
