Course Objective

To comprehend, theoretically and aurally, formal and tonal structures of symphonies composed in 18th (Classical era) and 19th (Romantic era) centuries.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Explain multi-movement works written in the genre of symphony according to their formal aspects
2   Define tonal shifts occurring within movements theoretically and aurally.
3   Designate composition techniques employed in symphonies.
4   Recognize the musical era that a particular symphonic work belongs to.
5   Compare Classical Era symphonies with Romantic Era symphonies.

Further Notes about Assessment Methods:
EXAMS: A Final exam will be held at the end of the semester and a student will earn 30% of his/her grade through this exam.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: A student will earn 70% of his/her grade via homework assignments given throughout the semester.

Assessment Criteria

Written exam (Final) and homework assignments aim at evaluating whether or not a student has achieved theoretical and applied proficiency as described in Learning Outcomes.
