Course Objective

: To analyze advanced counterpoint techniques employed in Baroque period through theoretical knowledge. The course is designed for piano students, thus, it is not oriented for composition using advanced counterpoint techniques, but rather for analysis of advanced techniques of counterpoint. The main objective is to enable a piano student to perform Baroque era works with theoretical awareness.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Understand polyphonic techniques used in Baroque period.
2   Analyze writing techniques and compositional genres such as Toccata, Prelude, Ground Bass, Chaconne, Passacaglia, Invention and Fugue.
3   Assess similarities and dissimilarities of these techniques.
4   Explain fundamentals of counterpoint.
5   Make a list of reasons why a particular composition, analyzed visually and audially, is written by a certain composer.

EXAMS: A Final exam will be held at the end of the semester and a student will earn 30% of his/her grade through this exam.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: A student will earn 70% of his/her grade via homework assignments given throughout the semester.

Assessment Criteria

Written exam (Final) and homework assignments aim at evaluating whether or not a student has achieved theoretical and applied proficiency as described in Learning Outcomes.
