Course Objective

The aim of this course is to get students to comprehend emergence and development of historiography as a science, main ideologies in the world historiography, their representatives and contributions, position of historiography in Turkey with regard to modern advancements.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   to summarize emergence and development of historiography as a science
2   to explain principal development stages of historiography
3   to list principal historian who contributed to development of historiography and their works
4   to explain emergence and development of modern historiography
5   to write principal approaches in the world historiography
6   to explain principal approaches in the Turkish historiography
7   to develop a historical viewpoint

Course Contents

1 To explain definition, aims, contents of the course and make suggestions about reading in the course
2 History and Historiography in the ancient civilizations prior to Herodotus.
3 History, Historiography and chief historians in the Ancient Greek.
4 History, Historiography and chief historians in the Roman Period.
5 Christianity and ıts impact on the historiography.
6 Impacts of the Renaissance and Reform on the historiography.
7 New approaches and advancements in the historiography in Enlightenment period: Industrial Revolution, Marxism and impacts of nationalism on the historiography and its results.
8 Mid-Term Exam
9 Emergence and development of Modern Historiography.
10 Position of historiography in Europe, Asia and America in the early twentieth century.
11 Entrance of Modern Historiography into the Ottoman Empire and its development.
12 Historiography in the world and Turkey in the inter-war period.
13 Developments in Historiography in the World and Turkey after World War II: "New History", "Annales", "Marxist Historical Perception"," Social History" and "Cultural Historiography".
14 Historiography in the world and Turkey after 1960.
15 Final Exam
