Course Objective

To be able to know the methods of data analysis in scientific research, and to practice, to use knowledge related to data analysis methods actively in the field studies of mathematics education.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to learn the existence of different methods of data collection and analysis tools
2   To be able to examine the data and the analysis methods of the studies conducted in mathematics education in the literature, and to look critically to these studies
3   To be able to perform computer-based data analysis, statistical tests in SPSS and to comment them, to code in Nvivo, to model etc. and to interpret them
4   To be able to collect data within the framework of a research question in mathematics education, to analyze it and to interpret the results
5   To be able to report the data analysis results and to present them

Course Contents

1 A brief directed to scientific research methods.
2 A general research and examination on quantitative research methods in mathematics education.
3 Discussing the sample selection methods, different research examples in quantitative research in mathematics education.
4 Discussing the data analysis, different research examples in quantitative research in mathematics education.
5 Using SPSS and examining the examples of its applications.
6 Interpreting the resolved data in quantitative research in mathematics education and discussing their meanings.
7 A general research and examination on qualitative research methods in mathematics education.
8 Midterm exam
9 Discussing the sample selection methods, different research examples in qualitative research in mathematics education.
10 Codng the data and discussing the different research examples in qualitative research in mathematics education.
11 Using Nvivo and examining the examples of its applications.
12 Interpreting the resolved data in qualitative research in mathematics education .
13 Discussing the meanings of the resolved data in qualitative research in mathematics education.
14 Performing data collection and analysis within the framework of a research question.
15 Final exam
