Course Objective

To recognize the structure, the types and the features of qualitative research that can be used in mathematics education and to gain skill to use these research type.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to explain what a qualitative research is, its types, data collection and data analysis process
2   To be able to examine qualitative research of the literature carried out in mathematics education and to be able to look critically to these studies
3   To be able to design a study based on qualitative research in order to investigate an appropriate research question that will be revealed from secondary mathematics education
4   To be able to make a research carried out by using qualitative research methods in mathematics education
5   To be able to report a study conducted based on qualitative research and to present it

Course Contents

1 A general overview to scientific research methods that can be used in mathematics education, similarities and differences of quantative and qualitative research methods, examining the place of the qualitative research in scientific research tradition.
2 A general overview to qualitative research methods used in mathematics education.
3 Examining qualitative research designs.
4 Examining qualitative research process.
5 Sample, data collection process (interview, focus group interview, observation and document analysis).
6 Qualitative data analysis.
7 The reliability and validity in qualitative research
8 Midterm exam
9 Contribution to the science and practice of qualitative research results
10 Literature review based on qualitative research done in the past and sharing them
11 Designing a research carried out using qualitative research methods in mathematics education
12 Carrying out a research by using qualitative research methods in mathematics education.
13 Carrying out a research by using qualitative research methods in mathematics education.
14 Reporting the research and presentation of it.
15 Final Exam
