Course Objective

The aim of this lecture is to give comprehensive teorical knowledge about properties of matter, atoms and theories, periodic table and atomic properties, nomenclature of chemicals and reactions, chemical bonding theories, radioactivity, fundamentals of organic and inorganic chemistry, gases, fluids and solids and also improve the ability of thinking about basic terms of chemistry.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Learn the aim of chemistry and fundamentals of matter.
2   Learn the atomic structure, theories, orbital and electron configurations.
3   Learn the periodic properties of elements and mole notion and solve the mole problems.
4   Learn the chemical compounds and notions of equilibrium and velocity in chemical reactions.
5   Learn the properties, laws and theories of gases.
6   Learn the properties of liquids and solids and notions about solutions and solubility.
7   Learn the fundamentals of inorganic chemistry , Lewis, VSPER, molecule orbital theory.
8   Learn the fundamentals of organic chemistry aromatic and alifatic organic structures.

Course Contents

1 The aim of chemistry, properties of matter, classification, SI system and logical numbers
2 Atoms and atom theories, orbital, elements, compounds and radioactivity.
3 Avogadro law, mole and mole problems
4 Periodic table and properties, classification of elements, radius of atom, ionization energy, electron affinity and electron distribution
5 Chemical reactions, limiting component and reaction stochiometry
6 1. Midterm
7 Chemical bonds, covalent, ionic and weak bonds, Lewis and formal charge
8 VSEPR theory and geometry of molecule, valence bond theory
9 Properties of gases, gas laws, kinetic and molecule theory of gases, ideal and real gases.
10 Attractions between molecules, properties of liquids and solids, crystal structure, ionic crystals.
11 Velocity, equilibrium and energy in chemical reactions.
12 2. Midterm
13 Acid-base reactions, precipitation and solubility reactions, oxidation reduction reactions
14 Organic chemistry

It is calculated by taking 40% average grade of Midterm exams, 60% of the final exam success rating.

Assessment Criteria

The understanding degree of students to 8 learning outputs is evaluated by midterm and final exams.
