: American Culture and Literature

General Description

History

Department of American Culture and Literature started offering undergraduate programs in 1991 and graduate programs in 1992. Language of instruction is English in all undergraduate and graduate courses. Both at graduate and undergraduate levels, curriculum is distinctively multidisciplinary and made up of courses in diverse fields of study such as cultural studies, literature, history, philosophy, politics, economy, and international relations.

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination, DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test (minimum 70) or TOEFL - IBT (minimum 79) or equivalent.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

In Turkish Higher Education institutions, the recognition of previous formal education and lateral and vertical transfers and transfers within the university are carried out within the scope of the assessment criteria determined by the Senate of our University and the REGULATION ON THE PRINCIPLES CONCERNING TRANSFER, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND CREDIT TRANSFER BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS AT UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION AND UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL.
(1) In lateral transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Principles Concerning Transfer, Double Major, Minor and Credit Transfer between Institutions at Upper Secondary Education and Undergraduate Level, published in the Official Gazzette dated 24/4/2010 No. 27561.
(2) In vertical transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Continuation of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Learning Upper Secondary Education with Undergraduate Programs, published in the Official Gazzette dated 19/2/2002 and No. 24676.
(3) In the transfers of those who completed or those who could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational schools, the provisions of the Regulation on Awarding Upper Secondary Education Diploma to those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education or Adjustment of those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education to Vocational Schools, published in the Official Gazzette dated 18/3/1989 and No. 20112.
In Turkey, the recognition of in-formal and non-formal education is yet on the onset. Therefore, the recognition of previous education has not been fully initiated in all programs at Dokuz Eylul University. However, if the student has successfully completed some of the courses in the program in the institutions where s/he previously studied, s/he can be exempted from all or some of these courses in line with the opinion of the adjustment commission.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

American Culture and Literature Department enables the students to make interdisciplinary connections among different cultures and literatures focusing mainly on the American social and cultural heritage. The program explores theoretical, analytical, and methodological approaches from various perspectives, including cultural studies, literature, history, and economy components. The goal of the program is to have students being able to synthesize and evaluate critically.

3   To have a basic knowledge of American political and social history.
4   To have a basic knowledge of American political and legal institutions and how they work.
5   To be well-informed about the major works of Western thought, art, and literature.
6   To be capable of carrying out comparative academic studies about diverse world cultures and their artistic, literary and philosophical achievements.
7   To be competent in textual analysis.
8   To be competent in cultural studies research.
9   To have a working knowledge of major literary and cultural theories.
10   To be capable of producing academic writing in English and Turkish.
11   To be capable of making academic oral presentations in English and Turkish.
12   To have developed a pluralistic and democratic world-view and a sophisticated awareness of differences in language, religion, class, gender, sexual orientation, cultural identity, and the like.
13   To abide by ethical criteria in academic work.
14   To be capable of life-long learning, multidisciplinary research, and self-development in diverse areas of study.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Employment after graduation is both in public and private sectors in the areas of language, culture, economy and politics. Major employment areas are English language teaching, translation, banking, tourism, international relations, public relations, journalism and media.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

Language of instruction in this program is 100% English. Students are obliged to take 3 (three) electives in 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th semesters, and 5 (five) electives in 7th and 8th semesters. Students are free to take non-departmental courses up to 8 (eight) ECTS once they fulfill the 30 (thirty) ECTS in departmental courses. These additional courses are not included in GPA but indicated in diploma supplement.

Graduation Requirements

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS.
