General Description

History

Chemistry Department was established in 1998 as a Department of Faculty of Arts and Sciences which turned out later the Faculty of Science in 2008. At undergraduate level, begun the education in 2003 and curriculum followed as the Active Learning method, which is often synonymously called Problem Based Learning till 2008. Chemistry Department consists of Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry as main scientific branches. Department of Chemistry offers one year English Preparatory School and four years Bachelors degree program in Chemistry. The language of instruction is partly thirty percent in English.
After being second class, the students have to complete their 20-working-day-internship. The students who complete the whole education program receive their Bachelor of Science in chemistry degree and work as Chemist. Graduate study is also available in Chemistry both at Masters and PhD level. The mission of the Chemistry Department is to produce well trained, creative, researcher, analytical thinker and practitioner personnel who have scientific thinking in the direction of the requirements and the development of both chemistry and industry. In addition, it is to be able to use the earned knowledge in the solutions of problems of national, regional industry organizations and to do research and publications in various fields of chemistry such as plastics, drug, dye, petroleum chemistry, metal, textile, ceramic, cement, detergent-soap, food, cosmetic, glass and packages-paper industries. The vision of the Chemistry Department is to improve organizational ties with the world of chemical science and chemical technology in national and international fields and to create a competitive environment for bringing chemistry education and research to a level equivalent to worlds and Europeans highly qualified universities.

Qualification Awarded

Chemistry, Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.)

Level of Qualification

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree)

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, Placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

For students who intend to transfer to Dokuz Eylül University from universities in Turkey and in foreign countries, the articles of Regulation on the principles of student transfer between programs at associate and undergraduate degrees in higher education institutions, dual major and minor program standards and principles on credit transfers between institutions as well as the Evaluation Criteria on Student Transfer determined by Dokuz Eylül University Senate are implemented.
The vertical transfers of the graduates of Vocational Schools to undergraduate programs related to their completed programs are subject to the rules of Regulation on the continuation of the graduates of Vocational Schools and Distant Learning Programs to undergraduate programs.
Exemption exam for English Preparatory School is carried out and those who pass the exam for exemption are exempt from the corresponding courses in the course program.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

To graduate from this 4 year program, students are required to successfully complete all courses and satisfy a minimum of 240 ECTS credits. The students also need to complete the 4 weeks practical training program, complete the graduation project and have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of a minimum of 2.00 / 4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The Department contains five divisions; analytical, bio-, inorganic, physical and organic chemistry. The Chemistry education programme includes one-year English language preparation period followed by 4 years. At the end of the Chemistry Bachelor of Science programme, they are awarded as Chemist. Students who are graduated from the Chemistry Department may apply to MSc and PhD programmes in Chemistry. The Bachelors Degree in Chemistry is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum, including 20 working days apprenticeship (course of instruction) period. Chemistry degree program is designed to provide the students the fundamentals of chemistry. The first year courses mainly consist of general chemistry, mathematics, and physics to bring the knowledge levels of students from different background to the same level. The compulsory courses offered in further years include analytical, bio-, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. These courses also include laboratory studies to provide technical skills necessary to enter their career as chemists. It was mainly aimed to give the students an analytical approach for solving any problem and handling complex information as well as the laboratory experience. Third and fourth year of curriculum include elective courses especially designed to developed the intelligent approach of the students to the problems of industry.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Alumni of the Chemistry Department serve as researchers, practitioners and consultants in production quality control departments and in development of production methods (R & D) in various industry organizations. Job opportunities for them in the research units of public and private organizations are very high. Furthermore, the students may acquire the opportunity to work as chemistry teachers in secondary schools by taking courses for pedagogical proficiency in teaching. Our graduates are qualified to work in food analysis, water-waste water analysis and environmental analysis, biochemistry laboratories, research-development centers, hospitals and also in quality certification education and environmental advisory companies. It is also possible to work in the area of work safety experts.

Access to Further Studies

Students who graduate from this program can apply for second cycle programs.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits
