Course Objective

The aim of this course is to make students grasp the emergency of historiography and development as a discipline, main historiographic movements in the World, representatives of them and their contribution to historiography,and the position of historiography in Turkey against current developments.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   To be able to summarize the emergency and development of history as a discipline
2   To be able to explain the main developmental stages of historiography
3   To be able to list main important historians who has been contributed to the development of historiography and their works
4   To be able to explain the emergency and development of modern historiography
5   To be able to write the main approaches in world historiography
6   To be able to write the main approaches in Turkish historiography
7   To be able to develop a historiographic perspective

2 History and historiography in antiquity before Herodot
3 History, historiography and important historians in ancient Greek
4 History, historiography and important historians in Roman period
5 Christianity and its effects on historiography
6 The effects of Renaisance and Reform on historiography
7 New pursuits and developments in historiography in Enlightenment Period; Industrial Revolution, effects of Marxism and nationalism on historiography and results of it
8 Midterm Exam
9 Emergency and development of modern historiography
10 Historiography in Europe, Asia and America at the beginning of 20. Century
11 Entrance of modern historiography into the Ottoman Empire and development of it
12 Historiography in the world and Turkey in the period between the two world wars
13 Developmenst in historiograph in the world and turkey after the II. World War: "New History", "Annales", "Marxist conception of history", "Social history" and "Historiography of Culture"
14 Historiography in the World and Turkey after 1960 s- Last 50 years of historiography in the world and Turkey
