Course Objective

To be able to harmonization to a given soprano and bass melody, able to harmonic analyze, able to comprehend and put into practice accompany models on the piano.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Builds triads.
2   Uses triads in harmonic progression.
3   Finds out the functions of the notes from the given melody.
4   Harmonizes in choral spacing with root, first and second inversion triads.
5   Harmonizes bass and soprano part.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The structure of triads, major and minor triads.
2 The inversions of the triads and figuring.
3 The progression of the I-IV-V triads.
4 The soprano part harmonization with I-IV-V triads in root position.
5 The bass part harmonization with I-IV-V triads in root position.
6 The soprano part harmonization with first inversion triads.
7 The bass part harmonization with first inversion triads.
8 Midterm exam.
9 The bass and soprano part harmonization with the root position and the first inversion triads
10 The bass and soprano part harmonization in the two sharp and two flat keys.
11 The bass and soprano part harmonization in the two sharp and two flat keys.
12 Harmonic analyzing of sample pieces.
13 Harmonization with the second inversion triads.
14 Harmonization with the second inversion triads.
15 Final exam.
