Course Objective

To provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge in methods on understanding and interpretation, with using the knowledge and evaluate it.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Students will learn main ideas of philosophers and schools on existence, knowledge etc. in the first era of the history of philosophy.
2   Will learn philosophers and general characteristics of the Ancient Greek era, of the Middle Ages Christian Philosophy, and of Islamic Philosophy.
3   Will identify philosophical characteristics of Renaissance era with its main figures and their ideas.
4   Will analyze philosophical characteristics of the Enlightment era with its main figures and their ideas.
5   Will identify possible contributions and outcomes of the history of philosophy to the theology discipline and how to apply those contributions to the lives of students.

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 Introduction to philosophy (Definition of philosophy ve its difference from other sciences; basic subjects of the history of philosophy, relationships of philosophy with science, religion and art respectively).
2 Ancient Greek philosophy before Socrates (Milet School, Elea School, main ideas of pluralist philosophers).
3 Sophists, Socrates ve Socratic Schools (General characteristics of Sophists; The goal and method of philosophy according to Socrates and its ideas on ethics and politics; Socratic schools such as Megara, Elis-Eretria, Kinik and Kirene schools and their main thoughts).
4 Plato and his philosophy (His thoughts on existence, "ideas" and the physical universe, soul and knowledge, ethics and politics).
5 Aristotle ve his philosophy (His thoughts on logic, metaphysical entity, physics and nature, soul and knowledge, ethics and politics).
6 Hellenistic philosophy (Epicurism and Epicur; notion of existence and ethics. Stoicism and Zeno of Citium, Neo-Platonism and Plotinus: notion of existence, knowledge, ethics).
7 Patristic philosophy (Saint Augustinus; his notion of knowledge, God, exiestence, ethics, politics and his theory of enlightment).

9 Islamic philosophy (General perspectives of Islamic philosophers on philosophy and logic, classification of sciences, ideas on universe, self, human nature, ethics and politics).
10 Scholastic philosophy. (prepatory era, early scholasticism, high scholasticism and decline periods, Saint Anselmus: Faith-Mind relations, onthological evidence. Thomas Aquinas: Faith-Mind relations, notion of metaphysics, existence, his ideas on the existence of God and His attributes).
11 Renaissance philosophy: (Renaissance and Christianity; Reformation, natural religion movement, philosophical movements in Renaissance era).
12 17th. century philosophy (Descartes: Theory of knowledge, his ideas on theology and metaphysics. Hobbes: Theory of knowledge, his ideas on physics, theology, ethics and politics. Spinoza: Theory of knowledge, his ideas on metaphysics, theology. Leibniz: His ideas on logic, physics, metaphysics, thoelogy and the freedom of man).
13 18th. century Enlightment philosophy (Meaning of Enlightment. Locke; Theory of knowledge, his ideas on theology, nature, ethics and politics. Berkeley; Theory of knowledge, his ideas on metaphysics, physics, theology and ethics. Hume: Epistemology, his ideas on pyschology, theology, ethics and politics).
14 Kant and German Idealism (Kant; Theory of knowledge, critique of pure reason, his ideas on theology and ethics, critique of pratical reason, practical philosophy and ethics. Hegel; Theory of knowledge, idealist dialectical method, ide or Geist. Feuerbach; philosophy of religion and ethics).
15 Final Exam
