Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide knowledge on the different stages of language acquisition in children within a time table and the potential problems they may face from birth on.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

0   Students are expected to
1   establish a linkage between communicatin-language-speech in the evolution of speech
2   give information on the theories of language acquisition
3   learn the language acquisition time-table
4   observe children's phonetic, syntactic, morphologic, semantic and pragmatic development
5   observe the development of reading and writing skills in children
6   identify problems in the development of language and speech acquisition
7   classify communication, langugage and speech disorders

Course Contents

Week Subject Description
1 The linkage between communication-language-speech in the evolution of speech. Language and society. Speech and language. Language production and cognition. Speech and the evolution of the brain. Speech and the development of the brain in child.
2 The content of language (semantics). Language and morphology. Language performance. The importance of language acquisition.
3 Theories on language acquisition in children. The behavioristic approach. The psychlinguistic approach.
4 Approac to social influence. The sociolinguistic approach. Weaknesses and strengths of the theories on language acquisition.
5 The phonetic development. Phonetic acquisition in children. The developmental stages in phonetic acquisition. Evaluating the developmental stages in phonetic acquisition.
6 Syntactic and morphological development. Morphology. Syntax. The structure of Turkish. Syntactic and morphological acquisition in children. Evaluating the syntactic and morphological developmental stages. The different developmental stages in syntax and morphology. Factors determining the order of the acquisition of morphemes.
7 Semantic development in children. The relationship between referential meaning and concept. Concept acquisition and concept development. The acquisition of words in children. Early childhood semantic development.
8 Mid-term exam.
9 Pre-school semantic development. In-school semantic development. What do we know about semantic acquisition in Turkish
10 Pragmatic development. The development of extra-linguistic knowledge. The functions of language. Developing sensitivity to interlocution and interaction. What do we know about the acquisition of pragmatics in Turkish
11 The development of reading and writing skills in children. Facts about reading and writing. Some important pre-skills in reading and writing. Processes in reading. Stages in the developing reading skills. Writing. How to teach reading and writing
12 Reasons for problems in language and speech development. The effects of problems on language and speech development.
13 Communication, Language and speech disorders. The classification of communication, language and speech disorders.
14 Overview and questions. Preparation for the final exam.
15 Final exam.
