Course Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students detailed information about the structure, mechanisms and policies of EU and relationship between Turkey and EU in the framework of tourism.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Have the necessary background knowledge on regional integrations, the historical development of the EU, the basis of the EU legislation, basic features, organization and functioning of the EU institutions to be able to comprehend the ideas behind European integration.
2   Assess the history of Turkey-EU relations to be able to discuss the interrelations between Turkey and EU and impacts of Turkey's possible accession to the EU on Turkey and EU.
3   Evaluate common EU policies in order to comprehend the EU's tourism policy approach and its impacts on EU's tourism and its reflections on Turkey-EU tourism relations.
4   Discuss common policies of the EU to be able to assess the interrelations between the EU's tourism policy and other common policies.
5   Evaluate the situation of European tourism and Turkey's tourism to be able to discuss the relationship between Turkey and the EU member countries and the future of this relationship.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

1. Lecture: There will be three lecture sessions every week.
2. Discussion: During the lectures some discussion topics related to lecture's content will be offered to the students.
3. Weekly Assignments: After every lecture students will be given assignments related to topics.
4. Student Presentations: Students present any of the given common EU policies as a group.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Each student is responsible for preparing a term paper individually. All term papers will be presented according to a predetermined calendar.

Assessment Criteria

1. The student will be able to explain the structure, organization, and historical development of the EU.
2. The student will be able to discuss Turkey-EU relationships.
3. The student will be able to assess the interrelations between the common EU policies and the EU's tourism policy.
4. The student will able to explain impacts of the EU on Turkey's tourism currently and in case of possible accession.
5. The student will be able to discuss the EU's tourism, Turkey-EU tourism relations and the EU's impact on tourism development in Turkey.

1. Attending at least 70 percent of lectures is mandatory.
2. Plagiarism of any type will result in disciplinary action.
3. Participation to the course and discussions during the classes is required.
4. Late arrivals to the class should be avoided.
