Course Objective

This course aims to scrutinize the pivotal phenomena and movements of the 20th century, focusing on the outstanding architects of the time, and their canonical ideas, works, positions and design approaches that have been figured out the present discourses and practices of contemporary architecture.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Define the major phenomena, concepts and movements of the 20th century architecture.
2   Identify the outstanding movements, architects, their ideas and productions of the 20th century architecture.
3   Relate economic, artistic, social, cultural and historical phenomena of the 20th century with the discipline of architecture.
4   Scrutinize the knowledge of the outstanding movements, architects and their productions of the 20th century architecture, reflecting in visual, literary and verbal form on the present architectural debates.
5   Criticize the practices of and the debates on contemporary architecture.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

This seminar course will be held on the general discussions through student assignments and presentations, as well as the lectures given by the instructor. Instructor will direct students with relevant information and resources for the student presentations. Courses will be in the form of high-performance presentations and discussions. Students will be encouraged to participate in class discussions. After the group presentations, the topic will be introduced to a general discussion by the instructor.

Further Notes About Assessment Methods

Midterm Exam (20%): An exam will be held throughout the semester.

Assignments and Student Presentations (20%): Assignments will be given in the light of group presentations and weekly discussions and prepared individually. In order to achieve the final exam, it is highly recommended to submit all assignments on time and regularly, and revise them with the guidance of the instructor. The instructor may group the students for presentations at the beginning of the semester. Group presentations require a collaborative effort. It is the group's responsibility to ensure that each group member contributes to the group work equally.

Final Exam (50%): It covers the topics dwelled on during the semester.
Participation (10%): Student participation will depend on, (i) the student's attendance, (ii) the quality of student's responses to the questions during the course and (iii) the student's contribution to create a positive learning environment.

Assessment Criteria

1. Exams intend to measure the ability of reading comprehension and interpreting the knowledge gained and discussed through the lectures. (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5).
2. Assignments and Presentations will be assessed through the criteria such as the clear understanding and addressing the issue, originality of the debate, depth of the phenomena and concepts, comprehensiveness, clarity, organization and format of the subject. (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5).
3. Active and continual participation of student is important in terms of comprehending the topics. (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5).

1. It is highly recommended to be attended the courses, MIM 2523 Sanat Tarihi and MIM 3811 Modern Mimarlık Tarihi.
2. It is not considered as a valid excuse to be absent in class for late submissions of assignments.
3. Late submissions will be subject to a different evaluation.
4. All kinds of plagiarism will result in a disciplinary action.
