Course Objective

The aim of the course is to give knowledge about dome design as a construction method, a structural upper cover, a shape element and a space determinant, to illustrate dome use in architecture from the viewpoint of both structure and sustainability and let the students prepare and present a paper.

2   Listing the categorization of domes according to its geometrical shape, load-bearing properties and materials,
3   Defining the structural properties of domes,
4   Defining the ecological and sustainability properties of newly constructed domes,
5   Illustrating dome categories,

Course Contents

1 Introduction to the course, Dome definition and general properties of domes
2 Historical evolution of domes, categorisation of domes according to their geometrical shape, load-bearing properties and materials
3 Domes according to their geometrical shape, domes according to their load-bearing properties (conglomerate, ribbed, monolithic, rod-net, tensegrity domes)
4 Domes according to their material (masonry, timber, reinforced concrete, metal domes), transition elements from dome to polygon plan
5 Load-bearing properties of domes
6 Ecological domes
7 Examination of dome examples in detail- from the viewpoint of materials used
8 Examination of dome examples in detail- from the viewpoint of structure
9 Examination of dome examples in detail- from the viewpoint of sustainability
10 Mid-term Exam

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The course will be taught in a lecture, student group presentation and design application format. First the lectures will be given. Then student groups will present their research on the 11th and 12th weeks. A dome design study will be done on the 13th week.

Course Policies and Rules

There will be lectures for 9 weeks, then student groups will present their research study on the 11th and 12th weeks. A dome design study will be done on the 13th week with drawings or model and submit this design on the 14th week.
