Course Objective

This course aims students to realize the values of historical and cultural sites, understand and discuss original characteristics and conservation problems of that sites; and questionize the conservation project proposals.

1   Describing concepts of historical site, cultural site and cultural heritage,
2   Recognizing notion on different dimensions of cultural heritage,
3   Showing awareness of conservation problems,
4   Criticizing subjective characteristics of cultural heritage,
5   Discussing different intervention approaches in conservation,
6   Proposing intervention decisions prior to conservation problems,
7   Expressing intervention decisions by visual, written and oral representation.

1 Introduction to the course; learning and teaching methods. Announcement of the program. General information on historical sites and conservation.
2 Introduction of the concepts of historical site, cultural site and cultural heritage.
3 Values in conservation, subjective characteristics of cultural heritage.
4 Intervention approaches prior to conservation, discussion of different intervention decisions throughout examples.

Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods

The learning process is based on problem based learning. In this frame, the concepts are introduced by theoretical transfers. Understanding and discussion of the conservation problems by joint criticisms, and development of intervention decisions throughout individual and group criticisms are provided. The performance of the students are observed and recorded via the executions in the studio, in the mid-term and in the final juries.

* One or more different case studies on different dimensions of conservation problems within the scope of the course are addressed. Decisions are proposed prior to conservation problems. In this context, small-scale documentation work with the use of the knowledge gathered by measured survey internship and works on analysis may be done.
* Open-jury may be done for the final submission of the projects.
