Course Objective

To comprehend music theory on advanced level.

Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit

1   Realise figured bass with all types of chords, non-harmonic tones, altered chords and modulations.
2   Harmonize soprano with all types of chords, non-harmonic tones, altered chords and modulations.
3   Define properties of modal music.
4   Distinguish main aspects of tonal and modal counterpoint.
5   Analyse works composed with contrapuntal technique.
6   Explain species of counterpoint.
7   Compose tonal and modal contrpoint lines.

2 Figured bass realization in 4 parts: 7th and 9th chords and inversions
3 Figured bass realization in 4 parts: secondary dominants, altered chords and non-harmonic tones
4 Figured bass realization in 4 parts: modulation
5 Soprano harmonization in 4 parts: triads, seventh and ninth chords and inversions
6 Soprano harmonization in 4 parts: secondary dominants, non-harmonic tones and altered chords
7 Soprano harmonization in 4 parts: modulation
8 Midterm Exam
9 Church Modes
10 Fundamentals of counterpoint
11 Counterpoint: 1 against 1
12 Counterpoint: 1 against 2
