DEGREE PROGRAMMES

: Geophysical Engineering

General Description

History

Our department was established in 1974 as the chair of Geophysics in the Faculty of Science, Aegean University at Bornova Campus, and it began to accept students in the period 1974-1975. Then it became the Department of Geophysical Engineering in Faculty of Engineering under the umbrella of Dokuz Eylül University, established by the Higher Education Act in 1982. Our department has provided undergraduate degrees for 38 years and graduate degrees including master and Ph.D. programs since 1982. The department, which moved to Tınaztepe Campus, Buca in 1999, performs studies in the fields of applied geophysics, seismology and solid earth physics.

Qualification Awarded

M.Sc. in Geophysical Engineering

Level of Qualification

Second Cycle (Master's Degree)

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; minimum score of 55 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK or a minimum score of 65 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The faculty members take part in a number of scientific research projects. Also the graduate students participate these projects, and they find opportunities to use the geophysical equipments in the inventory of the department.

Dokuz Eylül University is located in İzmir, which is one of the metropolitan in Turkey, and this makes our department attractive for graduate studies.

Each classroom used for graduate lectures has a computer and a multi-media projector used for digital presentations. In addition to theoretical education, graduate students are able to use geophysical equipments and software in the department to gain experience in geophysical data acquisition and analysis.

Our department has 7 laboratories. These are:
Applied Geophysics, Seismology, Seismotectonics, Solid Earth Physics, Geomagnetism, Remote Sensing (GPS), Geophysics-Electronics Application laboratories.

Also our department has an exhibition stand displaying some historical geophysical equipment. This stand, which was set up recently, aims to provide information on the development of geophysical devices.
