History

The program is established in 2004. There are 18 students still studying and 8 graduate students at the program. 17 full-time instructors (including 6 Prof., 3 Assoc. Prof., and 8 Assist. Prof.), are employed.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; minimum score of 55 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK or a minimum score of 70 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Main purpose of the program is to assist our country which has an important potential in natural building stones and gem stones to improve in research and development, to inform interdisciplinary graduates in the field of natural building stones and gem stones theoretically and practically, to teach interdisciplinary students who can meet the requirements by knowing the technology and demands and use effectively, to support and encourage academic researches.
A total of 17 full-time faculty members (including 6 Prof., 3 Assoc. Prof., and 8 Assist. Prof.) of Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Architecture Department and Archeology Department are involved in interdisciplinary Natural and Building Stones and Gemstones program. There are 18 students still studying and 8 graduate students at the program. The students of the program take advantage of the opportunities of the co-operate departments laboratories and facilities.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Able to improve and deepen the knowledge to expertness based to graduation qualifications in the field of natural building stones and/or gemstones.
2   Able to use the gained theoretical and practical data in the field of natural building stones and/or gemstones
3   Able to unite data of own field with the data gathered from different fields to form new solutions; able to solve questions using scientific investigation methods.
4   Able to understand interdisciplinary interaction of the field of natural building stones and/or gemstones.
5   In the field of natural building stones and/or gemstones, able to build a problem independently, develop a solution method, solve, verify the solutions and use them if needed.
6   Able to find new strategical approaches and solutions responsibly in unexpected complex situations.
7   Able to transpose current developments and personal work systematically to own disciplines or interdisciplinary groups written, spoken or visually.
8   To investigate social relations and standards directing these relations critically, developing or changing them if needed.
9   Able to use computer software, data processing and communication technology at advanced levels in the field of expertise.
10   Able to develop strategies, application plans and evaluate the results in the field of expertise
11   Be aware of problems of the era and be able to identify affects of engineering solutions on health, environment and safety with legal consideration in a global and social scale.
12   Be able to use internalized data and problem solving ability of field of expertise in interdisciplinary fields.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in the public or private sector. The graduates from the Natural and Building Stones and Gemstones can work in government corporations, as academicians and in several institutes and companies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

In addition to the compulsory courses of the programme, students register to elective courses appropriate for their thesis topic, on the consent of their supervisor. If necessary, on the consent of their supervisor, they can also register to courses from other programmes (from DEU or other universities). It is obligatory to register MAT5001 Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) or MAT5002 Numerical and Approximate Methods (3 0 0) or MAT5041 Mathematical Mehods (3 0 0) or MAT 5051 Methods of Applied Mathematics (3 0 0) with approval of the supervisor. The registration must be noticed to the Institute during course registration period by the supervisor.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades.
The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 54 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (3 ECTS) and M. Sc. Thesis (60 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
