General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul University Graduate School of Social Sciences Islamic History and Arts PHD program aims to educate students and researchers for productive scholarship and to educate well equipped researchers in the field of Islamic History and Arts who are able to get, produce and share academic information within scientific criteria and whose ability of knowledge, analysis and synthesis are developed. The Program includes the sub-fields of Islamic History, Turkish-Islamic Arts History, Turkish-Islamic Literature and Turkish Religious Music. PHD is available in all sub-fields above. Language of education and instruction is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; a minimum CGPA of 80/100 or 3/4; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field or GRE/GMAT equivalent; a minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (ÜDS/KPDS/YDS/e-YDS/YÖKDİL) or from equivalent foreign language proficiency exam

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylul University Graduate School of Social Sciences Islamic History and Arts program has 7 professors, 2 lecturers and 4 research assistants. There is a library that can facilitate the researches and thesis studies of the students and there is also wireless internet opportunity. The language of education and instruction is Turkish.

1   A student enrolled in this program; Gains the ability of use, being familiar to, and criticizing classical sources of sub-branches of the History and Arts of Islam Department,
2   Has information about new updates in the field of the Islamic History and Arts by following in domestic and abroad studies,
3   Gains the ability of accessing new data in PhD studies and of contributing to the field,
4   Gains the ability of reaching original conclusions by evaluating the contemporary and sophisticated thoughts and the data requiring expertise in the field of Islamic History and Arts,
5   Gains the ability of evaluating and using the contemporary data in the field of Islamic History and Arts by following a methodological approach,
6   Gains the ability of reaching proper conclusions from the contemporary data by evaluating in the framework of thesis-antithesis-synthesis,
7   Independently develops an idea, method, style, pattern or practice bringing innovation into the field of Islamic History and Arts,
8   Submits the studies in the program of Islamic History and Arts as useful and applicable for interdisciplinary studies,
9   Gains the ability of submitting the acquired knowledge and skills and the studies as a contribution to the areas of science, culture, and art,
10   Gains the ability of preparing the studies in the field of Islamic History and Art by keeping scientific, cultural and ethical values,
11   Reaches to the level of being able to discuss the issues of Islamic History and Arts with the experts of the field and to contribute into the field.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The students are employed in several of positions in especially public sectors. In particular, they work as imams in the mosques and Quran teachers in Quranic schools affiliated to The Presidency of Religious Affairs and as teachers at secondary and high schools affiliated to Ministry of National Education. Besides, they could serve as research assistants, lecturers and professors at universities.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

There are 2 required courses in each semesters of the first academic year in PHD Program in Islamic History and Arts. Other courses are elective .There are no pre-requisite courses in the program. The students who pass all the courses in 3 semesters are required to take the qualification exam. After they pass the exam, they prepare and defend their PHD thesis.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Measurement and evaluation methods for each course are defined in the course syllabi prepared by the instructor/s. Exam and passing grades are regulated according to the rules and regulations of Dokuz Eylul University, Graduate School of Social Sciences.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (83 ECTS), a field study (4 ECTS), seminar (3 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
