General Description

History

Dokuz Eylul Faculty of Medicine despite its short history is one of the leading medical faculties in Turkey and has gained an important role in education and health services among the medical faculties. The medical education lasts for 6 years; first 3 years basic medical courses, 4th and 5th years as clerkship and the 6th year as internship. 1 year of English preparatory School is compulsory unless proficiency in English certified. The programme is accredited by
National Medical Education Accreditation Board (UTEAK) according to National Standards for Undergraduate Medical Education in 2010 and is one of the first 8 faculties with an accredited education program.
Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine was founded as Izmir Faculty of Medicine by 12 professors on March 1st, 1978. In 1982 it was renamed as Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine. Since its foundation, the departments of the Faculty are classified under three main divisions, namely Basic, Internal and Surgical Medical Sciences. In 1997 beginning from the year 1 of the programme Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine has made a fundamental change in its undergraduate medical curriculum from traditional integrated curriculum to Problem-based Learning (PBL) in the first 3 years and Task-based Learning (TBL) in the clerkship years.

Specific Admission Requirements

High school diploma, placement through a nation-wide Student Selection Examination, DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test (minimum 70) or TOEFL - IBT (minimum 79) or equivalent.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

6 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 360 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

The aim of the program is to train skilled physicians who are aware of health problems, eager to respond to country's health needs, who have acquired the skill of learning how to learn, equipped with knowledge and skills appropriate for the communication era, open to continuous development, respectful of human rights and who will set positive examples for the community.

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession as a medical doctor in public and private healthcare institutions.

Course Structure Diagram with Credits

During the first 5 years of the medical education there are 27 courses defined as blocks and they last for 6-9 weeks. In the 6th year there are 13 internships. In the 4th, 5th and 6th years there are elective clinical rotations which provide the student the opportunity to work in a clinic he/she is interested in.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Graduation Requirements

During the first 3 preclinical years Problem Based Learning, and in the 4th, and 5th years Task Based Learning are used as educational methods. The 6th year is the internship year. The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum, acquired 360 ECTS credits, have minimum GPA of 65/100 in the first 3 years, 65/100 in 4. and 5. years and no failing grades.
