: Musicology

General Description

History

Musicology Deparment, which is the first academical department for systematical musicology education in Turkey, was found in 1975 as a brunch of Ege University. The department was found by Prof. Dr. Gültekin Oransay and started its education the next year. In 1982 it was seperated from Ege University and assigned to Dokuz Eylül University by Council of Higher Education. Music Technology, which was found as an option called "Electro-acoustic Audio Technique" in 1991, was renewed in 1996 as "Music Technology Programme". In 2008, the department was divided into two branch and programmes as "Musicology" and "Music Technologies". Both programmes have 4 years education and accept students through a specialized examination. Musicology Department offers both undergraduate and graduate programmes. master and Phd programmes. Musicology programme aims to teach the knowledge, ability and proficiency needed to study music as an artistic and cultural fact and it provides related scientific, artistic and cultural information.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

An undergraduate transfer to the faculty is applied within the meritorious regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 27561 dated 24.4.2010 about: transfers between associate degree programs and undergraduate programs, double major, lateral branch and interinstitutional credit transfer making.
In the vertical transfers; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 24676 dated 19.2.2002 about: undergraduate education attendance of graduates of vocational high school and open-university associate degree program is applied.
Within the transfer of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools; the regulation provisions published in Official Journal no: 20112 dated 18.3.1989 about getting associate diploma or adaptation of students who did not or could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational high schools is applied.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.
1- Training is performed based on course passing system in faculty.
2- Failed courses belong to an academic year are firstly enrolled next academic year.
3- Absolute assessment system is applied in faculty.
4- Grade point avarage (GPA) ; it is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying course credits with marks to total credit in relevant term.
5- General Grade point avarage (GGPA) ; it covers the whole courses and education period so far and is calculated by dividing the number which is found by multiplying all course credits with marks to total credit.
6- Only enrolled courses are taken into consideration in GPA and GGPA calculation, the courses which can not be attend are omitted. The last mark is considered for repeated courses. In average calculation, two decimal after comma is used.
7- The last mark gained for repeated courses is passing mark. Whether have been taking course addition to maximum load not exceedingly two courses or not and its conditions are determined by Faculy Administrative Board. The student must complete 4years of study acquiring 240 (ECTS )credits. At least 60 ECTS of 240 ECTS credits must have been electives courses. This degree is awarded to students who have successfuly completed all courses in the curriculum, 50 days of internship, Graduation project and have a minimum CGPA of 50/100 and no failing grades.

Profile of the Programme

The Musicology programme is applied in Musicology Department of Faculty of Fine Arts. Interdiscipliner charactheristic of the programme enables students to have education related to other academic disciplines such as anthropology and sociology besides artistic skills specific to music. To train individuals who can understand and enhance the environment he/she is living in with the knowledge and abilities essential for a musicologist, such as; reaching the information, knowledge of research and development, following the scientific and technological developments in the field, adapting his/her knowledge according to the social requirements in national and international levels, being open to interaction and being active while keeping the lifelong learning principles in mind.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   To identify the subdisciplines of musicology like historical musicology, systematic musicology and ethnomusicology and distinguish the theoretical and practical differences between them.
2   To explain the theoretical and methodological relationship between musicology and its closely related disciplines (anthropology, sociology, cultural studies etc.)
3   To define the theoretical, social/cultural, scientific and applied terminology and concepts on music.
4   To determine the research methods and techniques that are using for study of music.
5   To identify the cultural, stylistic and technical characteristics of transnational (Western art music, mainstream popular genres, world music etc.) and national (tonal and modal/makam) music practices.
6   To identify technological tools (equipment and software) for recording, transcription and analyzing of music.
7   To design musicological research projects and apply the methods and techniques for data collecting.
8   To reach and study the printed and online literature about research topics.
9   To present the results of research project in written (research report, proceeding, thesis, article etc.) and verbal (seminar, conference, symposium etc.) forms.
10   To play at least one musical instrument with tonal (piano, guitar etc.) or modal (baglama, ud, kemenche etc.) characteristics.
11   To aurally comprehend, analyze and transcribe music.
12   To use technical equipment skills (computer, camera, video camera, sound recorder etc.) for recording, transcription and analyzing of music.
13   To reach and study the international literature about musicology in a foreign language.
14   To design and an independent scientific research project on any musical topic, and suggest opinion about investigated fields.
15   To communicate as written and verbally with experts in musicology and other disciplines; effectively work and take responsibility in the research teams.
16   To adapte acquired competencies at the end of the learning process to different music sectors (music criticism, performance, media production, teaching etc.).
17   To contribute to scientific advancement of musicology on national and international level.

Students studying in Musicology programme specialize in the field of Musicology. After graduation, they have the opportunity to work in many areas related to music as well as musicology. Our graduates work music trainer and teacher, radio-tv producer, music critic, music journalist, and professional musicians as well as academician.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

The regulations for examination and grading are arranged in the fourth part of DEU Faculty of Fine Arts Educational and Examinational Regulations. The lowest grade to be successful in a credit course is 50. Detailed assessment methods and criteria for courses are explained in syllabi.

Graduation Requirements

1-A student is required to have minimum CGPA of 50/ 100 and no failing grades.
2-A student is required to have minimum 240 credıts of ECTS ın total. Electıve courses cover at least % 60 of 240 ECTS
