General Description

History

Architecture education in İzmir began in Ege Private School of Architecture and Engineering in Buca in 1963. Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture was founded in the 3rd of July in 1992. However, the establishment of the faculty and the launch of the education in Alsancak have begun in 1971 with 12 undergraduate students of Architecture. The department was affiliated to different faculties since its establishment. The milestones of the faculty from the past until today are summarized as; "Ege University Engineering Sciences Faculty Academy of Engineering and Architecture (1971), Ege University Fine Arts Faculty (1975), Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture (1982), Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Architecture (1992)". After the 23-years of education in the building in Alsancak, the faculty building moved to Kaynaklar Campus in Buca in the 2004-2005 academic year.

There are Architectural Design Master of Science and Doctorate Programs, Structural Construction Design Master of Science and Doctorate Programs, Restoration Master of Science and Doctorate Programs, at Dokuz Eylul University, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Branch of Architecture.

Specific Admission Requirements

First Cycle (Bachelor's Degree) diploma; minimum score of 55 from the National Central Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related field; a minimum score of 65 from the graduate school entrance exam; a minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Foreign Language Exam ( YDS ) or equivalent score from an exam accredited by YÖK or a minimum score of 65 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students may be accepted for graduate transfer with the approval of the Department Directorate and decision of the Board of Directors of the Graduate School in case the student fulfills the graduate transfer regulations decided by the General Council of the Graduate School. Previously taken courses at another graduate programme with a successful grade may be recognized by the related programmes with the written request of the students including course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the Department Directorates and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing Exchange students may have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective by the decision of the Board of Directors.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

2 years (excluding one year of English Preparatory School), 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 120 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

"Historic Environment, Research, Conservation and Restoration" department which was established in Ege University faculty of fine arts was the first post-graduate training in İzmir. As a result of changes in Universities by constituting of the Higher Educatio Council, "Historic Environment, Research, Conservation and Restoration" department is became the field of Dokuz Eylül University, Institue of Science, Architecture Department. In this context, some changes was made in training programs. However, as a result of there was not enough lessons in restoration during undergraduate training and requirements of expertise in the field, master program re-arranged as including three semesters of course from two in 1995-96 academic year.

Besides, there is 36 work days long "Restoration internship" during the training intended for preservation, restoration and evaluation of historic building and environment. Restoration internship aims theoretical and pratical knowledge as an integrated process during restoration for students.

For admission to the Restoration Master of Science Program, the students are required to have a Bachelors Degree in Architecture.

Restoration Master of Science Program recruits students in the specific dates according to the academic calendar (June-September).

Facilities Of The Department:

The fact that the department is located in İzmir, the center of West Anatolia, and that there are around a large number of antique cities and historical settlements, where the fabric is preserved, allows these areas to be a laboratory and an experimental area in the studies.

The staff and students of the Restoration Master of Science Program uses the classrooms, studios, laboratories, conference hall and other technical facilities of Dokuz Eylül University Department of Architecture. Besides, there is a classroom in the building which is used only by Restoration Program.

4   To bring experts who have the ability to create the necessary basis for data collection, evaluation and interpretation of making decisions on historical buildings and environments by taking environmental and ethic problems into consideration.
5   To bring experts who can, evaluate the available information on Historical Environment, Preservation and Restoration field with dialectical approach, who knows how to use his knowledge, skills and understanding required by the discipline of his professional approach, within the ethical principles, accordance with professional code of conduct, criteria and standards in accordance with the legal frameworks, by taking consideration into the possible social, environmental and ethical consequences.
6   To bring professions and scientists who will act and decide in the sense of justice by showing the necessary emphasis on Preservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage.
7   To bring experts who will act with understanding of ethics and code of conduct, habits, and social responsibility in professional field, professional practice and professional researches.
8   To have the necessary competencies on evaluation of Historical Environment and having the adequacy of current certification for professional practice in restoration.
9   To carry out academic researches on Historical Environment, Restoration and Preservation systematically and critically, to present papers in national and international media.
10   To develop strategy, policy, implementation plans on his profession and to evaluate the results within the framework of quality process.
11   To bring experts who has ability on producing documentation, restoration projects and reports, and who produces projects with interdisciplinary cooperation by the his skills and knowledge.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Architecture graduates who have master's degree can work in a wide range of areas that their profession gives them opportunity to perform. Some of them work as academics and start to work as a research assistant at universities.They are also employed at different parts of the public sector.In addition, employment of graduate students can be as freelance office architects, project designers, construction site architects and designers who work on presentation (3D - three-dimensional presentation, model, etc.).

Since restoration requires expertise, graduates are expected to work at both public sectors such as Municipality, General Directorate of Foundations , Preservation Board and projects which are about historic environment preservation and restoration construction sites. Also it is possible to work in public and private universities for those who intend to be academicians.

Related items of Dokuz Eylul University Regulations of Graduate Education and Exams and related items of Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences Regulations of Education and Code of Practicing Exams are applied for the exams and course grades.
The course evaluation criteria are defined for each course by the instructor(s) of the corresponding course and are given in the Course Description Form found in the information package.

Graduation Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) Programme with thesis is comprised of courses (at least 81 ECTS), a seminar (3 ECTS), M. Sc. Research (6 ECTS),restoration training and M. Sc. Thesis (30 ECTS), in total 120 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50 / 4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB / S / TP grades.
