General Description

History

Philosophy and Religious Studies PhD program aims to educate students and researchers for productive scholarship and to educate well equipped researchers in the field of Philosophy and Religious Studies who are able to get, produce and share academic information within scientific criteria and whose ability of knowledge, analysis and synthesis are developed. The Program includes the sub-fields of History of Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Sociology of Religion, Psychology of Religion, Religious Education departments. PhD is available in all sub-fields above. Language of education and instruction is Turkish.

Specific Admission Requirements

Second Cycle (Master's Degree) diploma; minimum GPA 80/100 or 3/4; minimum score of 60 from the nation-wide Academic Graduate Education Entrance Examination (ALES) in the related fields; minimum score of 60 from the Foreign Language Exams (UDS/KPDS/YDS) or TOEFL/IELTS equivalent or a minimum score 70 from DEU School of Foreign Languages English Proficiency Test.Transcript; a minimum score of 75 from the graduate school entrance exam.

Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Transfer Students:
The transfer student candidates from Turkish or foreign universities are subject to the YOK Legislation "The transfer, double degree, minor degree and inter-institutional credit transfer" and to the evaluation conditions determined by Dokuz Eylul University Senate.
The transfer quotas are determined and announced by Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK). The evaluation of the candidates are done by the school evaluation commmisin and approved by the management

The Graduate Transfers:
The short cycle graduates are given the right to be admitted to the first cycle programs if they comply with the conditions set by the "The transfer of Short Cycle Program Graduates to First Cycle Programs" Legilation of Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK)
The universities inform YOK regarding the quotas and YOK announces the quotas and conditions in "Graduate Transfer Guide" and the placements are managed by YOK due to the results of nationwide graduate transfer exam.

According to the Regulations of Dokuz Eylül University for Graduate Schools, students are not connected to the right for internal transfer, previously taken courses at another graduate programme by another university with a successful grade may be
recognized by the related programmes after the letter of the students includes course contents and the transcript, and by the recommendation of the head of the departments and by the decision of the Board of Directors. The courses taken by the outgoing
Exchange students have the recognition at the school either as compulsory or elective.

4 years, 2 semesters per year,16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.

Profile of the Programme

Dokuz Eylul University Graduate School of Social Philosophy and Religious Studies PhD Program has 15 professors and 14 research assistants. There is a library that can facilitate researches and dissertation works of the students along with wireless internet opportunity. The language of education and instruction is Turkish.

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Based on their competency they have developed in masters degree, they improve and deepen their knowledge and competency along with distictive and innovative research in the area of Philosophy and Religious Sciences, and so they gain an ability to reach original definitions which could bring novelty in science.
2   They apply scientific approaches, techniques and methods to their research.
3   They conduct innovative scientific interdisciplinary research.
4   They develop a scientific attitude to conduct a scientific research with ethical canon and principles.
5   They use formal ways of correct and consistent reasoning in arguments and their works.
6   They do systematic and philosophical analysis on subjects such as existence, knowledge, nature, arts, ethics, human, God, prophecy, politics, science and so on in both the history of humankind and the Islamic thought.
7   They compare, contrast and analyze subjects such as God, relationships between God-universe, religion-science, religion-arts, and religion-ethics, and they develop new approaches to those subjects.
8   They compare and analyze approaches towards the classical subjects and modern issues in philosophy of ethics such as happines, competency, virtue and so on; environment, occupation, job, politics, poverty, meaning of life and so forth, and they offer new approaches and developments in thoes areas.
9   They investigate and compare various religions, beliefs and religious movements in history and contemporary times in chronological and phenomenological approaches, and question the nature of interfaith dialogue.
10   They examine and compare classical and modern sociological approaches on subjects such as religion, religion-society relations, religious institutions, religious movements in Turkey and the world and so on, and they conduct original sociological reserach in those areas.
11   They conduct theoretical and practical research based upon philosophical approaches on subjects such as individual-religion relations, religious life, religious experience and so on.
12   They have the opportunity to work efficiently in formal and common religious education and by discussing positive communication techniques and approaches to develop new methods and approaches in communication.
13   They share their research and works, and the knowledge, competency and approaches that they have developed in the area of Philosophy and Religious Sciences with public in various ways such as publishing their works, presenting their research and so on.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

Graduates awarded the degree of PhD in Philosophy and Religious Studies are able to perform their jobs more professionally and they can assigned as research assistants or lecturers in the faculties of Science and Literature, Education, Human Sciences and especially in the faculties of theology.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates may apply to post doctorate studies.

The course work takes 3 semesters. All of the courses are elective. There is no prerequisite for any course. Students who finish their course work successfully will be eligible to take the PhD candidancy examination. Those who pass the exam will prepare PhD dissertation and defend it.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading

Measurement and evaluation methods for each course are defined in the course syllabi prepared by the instructor/s. Exam and passing grades are regulated according to the rules and regulations of Dokuz Eylul University, Graduate School of Social Sciences.

Graduation Requirements

Third Cycle (Doctorate Degree) Program with thesis is comprised of courses (84 ECTS), a field study (6 ECTS) and thesis (150 ECTS), in total 240 ECTS credits. Students must have minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50/4.00 and completed all the courses with at least CB/S/TP grades.
