General Description

History

Department of History was founded in 1998 and started education with Undergraduate Program in 2005-2006 academic years. Our department offers Graduate Studies in History; and also, comparative historical approach is preferred as an efficient method in Ph. Degrees. The History Department also offers Graduate studies with its enriched M.A. and Ph.D. programs.
In History program, language of instruction is Turkish. In the beginning of the every semester, students are given a reading list which covers the themes of the semester. This reading list helps students to comparatively recognize the different and necessary aspects of the historical topics. The purpose of this method is to make a contribution to the students critical and analytical thinking skills; as well as historiography and social sciences.

Specific Admission Requirements

Providing high school diploma and being placed in the program as a result of the Student Selection Examination conducted through the central system at the national level. Student placement procedures through central system are carried out by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). Specific Arrangements for Recognition of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

In Turkish Higher Education institutions, the recognition of previous formal education and lateral and vertical transfers and transfers within the university are carried out within the scope of the assessment criteria determined by the Senate of our University and the REGULATION ON THE PRINCIPLES CONCERNING TRANSFER, DOUBLE MAJOR, MINOR AND CREDIT TRANSFER BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS AT UPPER SECONDARY EDUCATION AND UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL.
(1) In lateral transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Principles Concerning Transfer, Double Major, Minor and Credit Transfer between Institutions at Upper Secondary Education and Undergraduate Level, published in the Official Gazzette dated 24/4/2010 No. 27561.
(2) In vertical transfers to the Faculty of Letters, the provisions of the Regulation on the Continuation of Graduates of Vocational Schools and Open Learning Upper Secondary Education with Undergraduate Programs, published in the Official Gazzette dated 19/2/2002 and No. 24676.
(3) In the transfers of those who completed or those who could not complete their undergraduate education to vocational schools, the provisions of the Regulation on Awarding Upper Secondary Education Diploma to those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education or Adjustment of those who could or could not complete their Undergraduate Education to Vocational Schools, published in the Official Gazzette dated 18/3/1989 and No. 20112.
In Turkey, the recognition of in-formal and non-formal education is yet on the onset. Therefore, the recognition of previous education has not been fully initiated in all programs at Dokuz Eylul University. However, if the student has successfully completed some of the courses in the program in the institutions where s/he previously studied, s/he can be exempted from all or some of these courses in line with the opinion of the adjustment commission.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

4 years, 2 semesters per year, 16 weeks per semester, 240 ECTS in total.In order for students to complete their education successfully in our faculty, their GPA (Grade Point Average) should be at least 2.00. Final year students who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 are entitled to take a one-course examination in order to increase the GPA if they are able to fulfil the condition of a GPA of 2.00 from the courses included in the program of the last four semesters. Those who are not able to get a GPA of 2.00 through one-course examination are entitled to take a mid-term exam, final exam or make-up exam from the courses of the last four semesters. The students benefit from this right of examination in the exam period during the semester in which the courses are opened. The students who would like to benefit from this right of examination declare the exams that they will take at the beginning of the semester during registration.
In order to complete from the Undergraduate Program of History Department, it is required that the students complete all the courses equivalent of 240 ECTS offered in the educational plan of 8 semesters, and they have the GPA with 2.00/4.00.

Profile of the Programme

The objective of the Undergraduate Program of the department of History is to raise historians who are equipped with the knowledge, skill, and competence that may serve in any field on which history can be applied; who have the social sense of responsibility and ethical values; who can interpret the effects of the changes and developments in local and global dimensions over history by following them; and who are objective, curious and scientific.
The language of instruction in Undergraduate Programs is Turkish. The History Department also offers Graduate studies with its enriched M.A and PhD. programs.
The Department offers Double-Major and Minor-Major program with the Department of Archeology for students who has specific qualifications. Relevant information on these regulations available at:

Key Learning Outcomes

1   Could be able to define fundamental concepts and terms in history, could know the relationships of history to other disciplines which cooperates with history.

5   Could have knowledge about the political, social, and economical history of the Eastern and Western societies of the Middle Age.
6   Could know the history of the Selcuqs and Anatolian principalities.Could have knowledge about the foundation and construction of the Ottoman State.
7   Could know the political, social, and economical history of the Ottomans in the New Age.Could know the political, social, and economical history of the Europe in the New Age.
8   Could have knowledge about the Science Philosophy and methodology of History, could follow the developments in the historiography in the world.Could have knowledge about local historical research and its methodology.
9   Could analyze the socio-economic transformation, modernization , and political history of the Ottoman State in the Modern Age.Could analyze the socio-economic and political transformation of Europe in the Modern Age.
10   Could analyze the democratization and modernization process of the world and Turkey and its landmarks in the past decades
11   Could have knowledge and analyze the political, social, economical, and cultural dimensions of the history of the world and Turkey in the Modern Age.
12   Could read and write the Ottoman Turkish and could have knowledge and skill to use Ottoman archive document.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

This degree enables the holder to exercise the profession in the public or private enterprises. Alumni who have necessary qualifications can be appointed as history teachers to the States high schools. If they prefer, they will have chance to work in other Civil services. They can also be appointed as history teacher in private collages and institutions. In addition to these, newspaper, libraries, archives, museums and international organizations are the other areas that they prefer to work.

Access to Further Studies

The students who have completed their undergraduate education successfully can continue their studies in graduate programs (second cycle) in their own field or related fields provided that they pass the examination ALES and have sufficient knowledge of English.

Graduation Requirements

The degree is awarded to students who have successfully completed all the courses in the curriculum and have a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.00 / 4.00 and 240 ECTS.Graduation requirements are as stated in the chapter Qualification requirement and regulations.
